Prompt: In one sentence is the spark of a story. Ignite.
In the tip of a pencil is a thought ready for life to be breathed into. A golden leaf rustles impatiently in the crisp Northern winds of a deserted town. The ghost of a touch rekindles the agony of a spinster’s loss after years of treatment. The yelp of a puppy brings forth the forgotten compassion of a veteran come back from years of military service. The mute soundlessness after the splashing dive of an inexperienced diver awes him as his breath leaves his lips in bubbling swirls. Within a line of angry patients a cry breaks through, silencing the babbling mob as a new new voice comes to exist. And as a past smoker flicks the cover of his lighter open and closed, the old flame nearly ignites only to be doused by the cool water of control as it is pocketed for the nth time. Experiences so out of the blue you’d have your thoughts tangled into a thousand knots trying to piece them together…

This is a little manga I wrote to show how a girl’s efforts to make someone hurting smile ends up revealing a similar compassion from the very boy she was trying to comfort. It shows how a little kindness can sometimes seem pointless but it can be contagious and turn around to help the person giving it more than the one receiving it.

If you write just about one type of person, not only is that boring, not only does that deprive people of other points of view, it is also just false. It’s not what the world looks like. You should try to write about the world that’s there, because that’s the interesting one.
Joseph Fink, who’s p good at writing, I think. (from this week’s Philadelphia Weekly)
Drew her in Psychology class and it made me think.. Drawing characters wearing armour, does it mean, if anything, that the artist is shielded? Guarding themselves from everyone, including part of themselves? I don’t know, but I might ask my professor that. I am going into the field so might as well get everything I can out of him. [ laughs ]
